Continental Refining Co. (CRC) has begun shipping crude oil by rail from the Somerset Rail Park in Kentucky, the company announced this week.

The 34-acre railroad facility is located in Ferguson, Ky., and is along the Norfolk Southern Railway network.

The use of rail-to-truck and truck-to-rail transloading via the park will enable CRC to expand its national distribution more efficiently, company officials said in a press release.

"We now have the added advantage in our region of shipping products farther and reducing costs, while utilizing a new resource," said CRC President and Chief Executive Officer Demetrios Haseotes.

CRC began using the intermodal facilities July 27. The company is bringing in gasoline components for gasoline pool blending and hopes to continue procuring additional blending components in the future. CRC also is buying transmix fuel and transporting it by rail.
