Cubic to supply regional smart-card system for L.A.-area agencies

Cubic Transportation Systems Inc. recently obtained a contract from Los Angeles-area transit agencies to supply central computer and clearinghouse integration for the Universal Fare System. A regional transit smart card-based fare collection system, Universal Fare is designed to connect transit systems throughout Los Angeles County.

Based on Cubic’s Nextfare™ software, the system will be used to generate reports, manage host files, perform credit/debit card transaction processing and distribute TAP card information to service providers.

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA MTA) will install a regional back office and clearinghouse system to settle funds, reconcile finances and manage data for regional participants.

To be named "TAP," the smart card will enable passengers to more easily transfer between LA MTA and Metrolink services, and the region’s bus systems.
