Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA) recently awarded an $11.6 million contract to Cubic Transportation Systems to upgrade its fare-collection system.
The upgrades will enable WMATA passengers to use one smart card for all Metrorail, Metrobus, park-and-ride and regional bus services. The new system also will provide WMATA a centralized transaction processing and reporting back-office system.
Cubic will install its Nextfare™ Central System, which features core fare collection and financial accounting capabilities, and its Tri-Reader® to process a range of contactless smart cards.
In 1999, Cubic installed WMATA’s original Metrorail fare-collection system. By 2004, the company had expanded the system to collect fares for Metrobus and nine regional agencies.
