advertisement
Yesterday, Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) completed testing along a 1.5-mile light-rail extension between West End and Union stations, and the new Victory Station.
Scheduled to begin service Nov. 13, the extension will link downtown Dallas and the American Airlines Center (AAC). DART will operate trains between West End and Victory stations one hour before and one hour after AAC events. The agency also will offer limited evening service to Victory Station Monday through Friday.
DART currently serves 57,000 daily passengers on its 44-mile, 34-station light-rail system. During the next 15 years, the agency plans to extend its system 49 miles, linking Pleasant Grove, South Dallas, Fair Park and Deep Ellum to the southeast with the Medical/Market Center, Love Field, northwest Dallas, Farmers Branch, Carrollton, Las Colinas, Irving and Dallas-Fort Worth Airport to the northwest. DART also plans to extend service south from Ledbetter Station in South Oak Cliff to Interstate 20 and northeast from downtown Garland to Rowlett.
To increase service, the agency plans to take delivery of 20 new light-rail vehicles in 2005 and obtain another 100 vehicles by 2010.
