From July 13-27, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will test security equipment and operating procedures at the Exchange Place Port Authority Trans-Hudson station. The second phase of the department’s rail security pilot project, the test will be conducted in conjunction with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

DHS will evaluate the effectiveness of imaging technologies in detecting explosives. The department also will determine equipment performance and monitor screeners’ actions.

DHS will use test data, such as false alarm percentages, screening rates, passenger delays and manpower requirements, to determine the cost of screening passengers and conducting risk analyses, and identify technologies and operational procedures for mass transit applications.

Conducted between Feb. 6 and March 1, the pilot’s first phase focused on screening bags and passengers at Exchange Place Station using X-ray machines and metal detectors.
