Duke Energy to build eight-mile rail spur to Indiana power plant

advertisement

Duke Energy recently selected a route for a rail spur that will serve its new Knox County, Ind., power plant.

The company is building an advanced coal gasification facility to replace a power plant near Vincennes, Ind., that was built in the 1940s. The eight-mile rail spur will run from the new plant to an Indiana Southern Railroad connection just south of Sandborn.

After evaluating several choices, Duke Energy selected a route that will generally run along the former rail line that once served the current Edwardsport Station. Although the company acquired the former rail line in November, Duke Energy still needs to purchase additional land rights from property owners along the route. Construction of the rail spur is expected to begin in 2010 and conclude by the time the plant opens in 2012.

Duke Energy will use the spur to move sulfur byproducts from the new plant to resale markets. The spur also will provide the company a transportation alternative for delivering coal to the plant.
