Dulles Corridor project poses concerns, U.S. Inspector General says

The U.S. Office of Inspector General recently issued a report on the Washington, D.C.-area Dulles Corridor Metrorail project that identified several potential funding and planning concerns.

The office recommended the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) conduct additional reviews on the sufficiency of local funding sources, and analyze contractual and other agreements with WMATA, and the Washington Metropolitan Airports Administration’s project management plan. The inspector general also recommended FTA re-evaluate the transportation user benefits for the corridor before awarding federal funding. In addition, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act Credit Council should conduct an independent review of the project’s loan application.

The project’s first phase calls for extending Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) service 11 miles from East Falls Church to Reston, Va. Under a second phase, Metrorail service would be extended another 12 miles to Washington Dulles International Airport.
