EMD wins Illinois pollution prevention award

Electro-Motive Division's (EMD) LaGrange, Ill., plant recently received the 2004 Illinois Governor's Pollution Prevention Award — one of four companies to be honored in the "large industry" category.

The award recognizes the General Motors Corp. subsidiary's efforts to reduce waste, recycle materials and minimize the environmental impacts of manufacturing byproducts. The LaGrange facility uses reformulated engine paint, lead-free solder and more environmentally friendly products during cutting processes, and engine and tool cleaning. EMD workers also reduced the amount of water in industrial sludge, increased the amount of oil sent for recycling and donated more than 500 office computers to a non-profit organization for refurbishing.

"Through product substitution, implementation of an environmental management system and aggressive recycling, Electro-Motive is proving that what is good for the environment also is good for business," said George VanderVelde, director of the Waste Management & Research Center division of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources — which handed out the awards — in a prepared statement.
