Norfolk Southern Corp.'s efforts to improve coal deliveries for a chemical manufacturing plant last year have garnered recognition. Eastman Chemical Co. recently awarded the Class I its 2007 Global Logistics Supplier Innovation Award.

NS developed and implemented a new coal handling/delivery process for Eastman's Kingsport, Tenn., plant. The redesigned service plan has resulted in improved delivery schedules, consistent operations and efficiencies for both Eastman and NS, the coal receiver said.

Meanwhile, Owens Corning has named BNSF Railway Co. the Intermodal Carrier of the Year — the fourth time since 2002 the Class I has attained the shipper's honor. The award recognizes the railroad's service consistency, safety and partnering efforts.

Last year, BNSF handled more than 7,700 intermodal loads for Owens Corning, with the freight ranging from insulation products to composites.
