Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
The Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway Co. (EJ&E) recently implemented RMI's RailConnect™ Transportation Management and Revenue Management systems to improve rail-car utilization and customer service. The 560-mile regional also plans to begin using RMI's Web-based ShipperConnect system to improve communication with shippers.
The systems will enable EJ&E officials to increase the road's use of Automatic Equipment Identification (AEI) technology and improve car tracing. AEI readers installed near lead tracks will automatically record car placements and pulls. Currently, clerks record car numbers on paper and manually key the numbers into EJ&E's computer system.
"[The systems] will allow us to better serve our customers as we have eliminated or reduced much of the paper and time-intensive manual processes," said EJ&E President John Pranaitis in a prepared statement.
Owned by rail and water transportation services firm Transtar, EJ&E operates between Waukegan, Ill., and Gary, Ind., and moves about 280,000 carloads annually.
