On Jan. 7, National Industrial Transportation League President Edward Emmett announced plans to resign May 6 "or at a date more advantageous and mutually agreeable" to the League, according to a prepared statement.
Emmett, who resides in Bethesda, Md., with his wife Gwen, plans to move back to Texas.
"By September of this year, three of our four children will be living in Texas [and] many of our close friends, political and personal, are now in Texas," said Emmett in a letter to NITL Chairman Tom Pellington. "Even though we have developed some close friendships in the D.C. area, the closeness of family and the strength of heritage draw us back to Texas."
Emmett, 53, believes his 10-year NITL tenure was highlighted by "the metamorphosis of the League into a world-renowned organization."
Before joining NITL, Emmett served as commissioner of Interstate Commerce Commission and a Republican representative in Texas, where he served as chairman of the Texas House Committee on Energy. He also was a member of the House Committee on Transportation, and represented the state on numerous national committees concerning energy and transportation policy.
Emmett currently serves as board member for U.S. Merchant Marine’s Center for Global Logistics and Transportation, Business Advisory Committee of Northwestern University’s Transportation Center and University of Denver's Intermodal Transportation Institute.
"Ed’s leadership and commitment to the League will be deeply missed," said Pellington.
