Skyrocketing gas prices have helped the Port Authority of Allegheny County post its monthly highest ridership figure in 41 months. In September, the authority’s ridership increased 5.6 percent compared with September 2004.

Last month, the port authority provided an average of 259,765 rides each weekday on its light-rail and bus systems — almost 14,000 more than it provided in September 2004. During the first three months of FY2006, ridership has increased 2.9 percent.
