The January Transportation Services Index (TSI) of 121.4 rose 0.8 percent and 4.9 percent compared with December and January 2003, respectively, and reached its highest level in 14 years according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
The increase represents the fifth-straight monthly gain following decreases in July and August.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the freight TSI decreased 0.9 percent in January compared with December's record high 120.9. But the January index increased 2.3 percent compared with January 2003's 117.1.
The passenger TSI of 125.1 rose 4.9 percent in January — the largest month-to-month increase since December 2002 — after the December 2003 index decreased for the first time in seven months. January's TSI rose 11.5 percent compared with January 2003 and exceeded the previous peak index of 122.1 in November 2000.
During a six-month period ending in January, the TSI, freight TSI and passenger TSI rose 5.1 percent, 2.6 percent and 11.2 percent, respectively, compared with a similar period ending in January 2003.
The TSI is a measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipelines and local transit. The index includes historic data from 1990 to the present; changes are measured against a base year of 1996.
