FRA awards million-dollar grant to Operation Lifesaver

On May 16, Federal Railroad Administration awarded a $1.02 million grant to Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI), enabling the non-profit rail-safety education organization to continue providing public-education and awareness programs on grade-crossing safety and trespassing to primary- and secondary-school educators and students, general audiences, law enforcement and judicial officials, emergency responders and truck drivers.

OLI also plans to use a portion of grant to fund regional and local outreach programs.

"OLI's ongoing partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation and the railroad industry provides ample evidence that sustained public-private cooperation can indeed bring about positive [safety] results," said FRA Administrator Allan Rutter in a prepared statement.

The grant is included in the Omnibus Appropriations Act for 2003. A 25 percent matching-fund requirement would enable OLI to solicit additional funds from non-federal sources.

Created in 1972, OLI operated under National Safety Council's authority until 1986, then incorporated as a non-profit organization.
