The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) recently obtained a $6.7 million Federal Railroad Administration grant to study a proposed high-speed passenger-rail line between Atlanta and Chattanooga, Tenn.
GDOT will use the grant, along with $1.2 million in other funds, to prepare an environmental impact statement. The department also will analyze the need for the project, and determine corridor and station locations, ridership estimates, and whether to use magnetic levitation technology or conventional high-speed trains.
