The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) recently granted $1.02 million to Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI) to help fund grade crossing safety and trespassing prevention programs nationwide.

As part of a grant agreement, OLI is required to receive 25 percent matching contributions from non-government sources to boost funding to a total of $1.37 million.

Since 1995, the highway-rail grade crossing collision rate has declined from 6.92 to 3.84 per million train miles and fatalities caused by train-vehicle collisions have decreased from 579 to 356 per year. However, trespasser fatalities have remained fairly constant at about 500 annually, OLI said.
