The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) will provide Operation Lifesaver Inc. a $1 million grant to help the organization further its rail safety education mission.

Grant proceeds will help fund Operation Lifesaver’s educational and training programs; the non-profit organization will provide $338,332 in matching funds.

Operation Lifesaver also plans to use the grant for its States Assistance Program, which provides up to 50 grants to state organizations that manage rail safety awareness programs, including those addressing the dangers of grade crossings and trespassing. In addition, the funds will support regional workshops, communications programs, publications and public service announcements.

Within the next year, Operation Lifesaver plans to launch a targeted outreach program for Hispanic and Latino communities, and review training and educational materials developed for trespass prevention programs.

Meanwhile, the FRA is conducting a public meeting in Syracuse, N.Y. today to gather feedback on how the agency can improve safety at private grade crossings. The administration is holding a series of public meetings nationwide to better understand issues surrounding private crossings, which are not subject to the same federal safety regulations as public crossings.
