Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas (METRO) recently obtained a $12.2 million transit studies grant from the Federal Transit Administration to fund environmental studies, and preliminary planning and engineering work for projects included in the METRO Solutions Transit System Plan.
Under the plan, METRO will add two extensions to its 7.5-mile light-rail line. The 5.4-mile North Corridor would run from University of Houston-Downtown to Northline Mall. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2006 and conclude in 2009.
The 7.1-mile Southeast Corridor would run east-west from downtown to the Loop 610/Griggs area. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2007 and be complete in 2011.
