The Federal Transit Administration and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recently signed a $173.3 million agreement to purchase dozens of 6000 series rail cars.

The federal government will provide $104 million during thee next three years; local jurisdictions served by WMATA will fund the remainder.

The agreement is part of a $600 million, six-year WMATA plan to purchase 122 passenger cars, and upgrade traction power facilities, train control and yards to accommodate them. Later this summer, the first of the new 6000 series cars will enter service, helping WMATA meet its goal of operating eight-car trains for 20 percent of its service by year end.
