Sound Transit continues to garner federal support for its light-rail system. The agency stands to receive an additional $94 million in federal funds in fiscal-year 2008 as part of the proposed Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill, which is awaiting the president’s signature.

Sound Transit would receive a $70 million installment of its $500 million Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA) for the initial 15.6-mile Link light-rail line between downtown Seattle and Tukwila, Wash., which now is more than 80 percent complete. The agency expects to open the downtown-to-Tukwila segment in July 2009 and final leg to Sea-Tac International Airport in December 2009.

Sound Transit also would receive $24 million for the 3.15-mile University Link light-rail line, which would run from downtown Seattle to the University of Washington. The funding would be part of a $750 million FFGA the agency is seeking for the project.
