New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chairman Peter Kalikow is opposed to cutting service or raising fares for the authority’s subway, commuter railroad and bus systems in 2007.
During the past decade, ridership has been “astounding,” with subway and bus ridership increasing 36 percent between 1995 and 2005, Kalikow said in a statement released Sept. 20.
“Now is simply not the time to reduce service to our commuters who have responded in such incredible numbers to the MTA’s service program,” he said.
In addition, if revenue continues to stream in at its current pace, Kalikow believes there’s no reason the authority should implement a fare increase next year.
