Federal funds to help CPR find ways to reduce fuel usage

On Monday, Transport Canada announced seven companies — including Canadian Pacific Railway — will receive grants totaling $1 million though the agency’s Freight Sustainability Demonstration Program.

The grants will help fund projects designed to demonstrate the effectiveness of energy-efficient technologies, such as alternative fuels and hybrid electric-diesel delivery trucks.

CPR will receive $250,000 to implement and analyze new operating practices designed to reduce fuel usage. Managers will provide engineers training techniques and offer feedback on their train handling performance. During a 12-month period, managers will measure fuel usage monthly to assess the practices’ and feedback’s impact.

Transport Canada also will provide grants to Air Canada, FedEx, FIBA Canning, Hudson’s Bay Co., Innovation Maritime and Saskatoon Diesel Services.

The demonstration program is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Canada’s freight transportation sector. Transport Canada will fund up to half of an eligible project’s cost, up to $250,000.
