On July 29, former Burlington Northern Railroad Vice President and Chief Operations Officer Donald Henderson died at his home in Marco Island, Fla., according to BNSF Railway Co.’s “BNSF Today” Web site. He was 68.

Henderson joined the BNSF predecessor railroad in 1986 as VP of technology and communications. In 1995, he retired from BNSF as VP of network operations. Prior to his railroading career, Henderson served the U.S. Air Force in various capacities, retiring as a major general in 1986.

“Don was an innovator in technology and a visionary force behind Burlington Northern Railroad’s emergence as a leader in the application of technology from other fields to railroad operations, which remains a distinguishing characteristic of today’s BNSF,” said Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Matt Rose. "From exploring alternative locomotive fuels, such as natural gas, to using GPS information to establish train locations, Don helped lay the foundation for many of the technologies we are continuing to develop to make railroad operations safer and more efficient.”
