E. Hunter Harrison is a chief executive again, but not in the rail industry and not for the long haul. Yesterday, Dynegy Inc. named him interim president and chief executive officer to take over for David Biegler, who was interim president/CEO and now will serve as an independent board member.

Harrison formerly was president and CEO of CN from January 2003 to December 2009, and the Class I’s chief operating officer from 1998 until 2003. Prior to joining CN, he was president and CEO of Illinois Central Railroad from 1993 to 1998, and the railroad’s COO from 1989 to 1993.

The governance and nominating committee at Dynegy  — which produces and sells electric energy, capacity and ancillary services in major U.S. markets — plans to continue searching for a permanent president/CEO.

“This is an important step as we execute the transition to new leadership,” said Biegler in a prepared statement. “Harrison brings a connection with the recently appointed members of the board, as well as significant business experience and a strong interest in moving the company forward.”
