On Dec. 19, former Federal Railroad Administrator and active RailAmerica Inc. board member John Sullivan died in his sleep. He was 81.

A Naval officer who served the USS Midway in the Mediterranean, Sullivan managed former President Jimmy Carter’s campaign before Carter appointed him Federal Railroad Administrator in the mid-1970s. Since 1992, Sullivan had served on the boards of RailAmerica and McGrath Corp. He also was an avid golfer and entrepreneur.

Sullivan is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mickey, six children, 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The family asks that memorial donations be made to Hope Rural School in Indiantown, Fla.
