Four Class Is honor chemical shippers' safety achievements

Four Class Is recently handed out awards to more than 200 chemical shippers to recognize their hazardous-materials handling and shipping safety achievements.

CSX Transportation presented 2006 Chemical Safety Excellence Awards to 62 shippers. The 13th annual awards recognize customers who ship more than 600 cars of chemicals without a non-accidental release in a given year, and honor shippers’ commitment to rail-car maintenance and tank car loading safety.

Meanwhile, Norfolk Southern Corp. presented 2006 Thoroughbred Chemical Safety Awards to 32 shippers. Created 11 years ago, the awards recognize companies that ship more than 1,000 haz-mat carloads without an incident.

At Canadian National Railway Co., officials presented 2006 Safe Handling Awards to 93 shippers. Launched in 1992, the awards recognize companies that meet strict haz-mat handling, shipping and safety criteria.

Finally, Union Pacific Railroad presented Pinnacle Awards for chemical transportation safety to 30 shippers. The 11th annual awards recognize chemical and petrochemical customer’s safety achievements, including loading techniques, cargo securement and zero non-accident releases.
