Newsweek recently ranked four U.S. Class Is on its first-ever “Greenest Companies” list for transportation and aerospace companies. The magazine ranked BNSF Railway Co. No. 6, CSX Corp. No. 7, Norfolk Southern Corp. No. 11 and Union Pacific Railroad No. 20.

The top five are United Technologies, United Parcel Service, FedEx, Rockwell Collins and Lockheed Martin.

Newsweek noted BNSF’s initiatives to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, such as by employing new hybrid locomotive technologies, electric cranes, and natural gas-powered locomotives and trucks, and efforts to phase-out older locomotives and install idle-control devices, according to an item posted on the “BNSF News” Web site.

The magazine worked with environmental research firms KLD Research & Analytics, Trucost and CorporateRegister.com to rank the 500 largest U.S. companies based on their environmental performance, policies and reputation. In terms of overall rankings, BNSF came in at No. 159, followed by CSX at No. 204, NS at No. 338 and UP at No. 439.
