Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Freight-rail shipper coalition CURE recently elected former congressman Glenn English chairman.
Chief Executive Officer of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, English previously served 10 terms as a U.S. representative for Oklahoma.
CURE also elected Donald Kimball, CEO of the Arizona Electric Power Cooperative, president; Joe Maher, senior vice president and general manager of UPM-Blandin Paper Co., vice president; and Alan Cramer, administrative manager for Total Petrochemicals, secretary and treasurer.
Formerly Consumers United for Rail Equity, CURE comprises representatives from municipal and investor-owned utilities; rural electric cooperatives; and chemical, ethanol, cement, forest products, paper and other rail shippers. Members are seeking federal rail policy reforms to ensure coal is delivered on time to more than 900 consumer-owned electric cooperatives.
“The nation’s rail system needs increased competition and federal oversight to meet the economic needs of this country,” said English in a prepared statement. “If the Surface Transportation Board won't do it, then Congress must.”
