On Nov. 7, GATX Rail announced it ordered 5,000 rail cars from Trinity Industries Inc. subsidiary Trinity Rail Group, completing orders for the leasing company's 7,500-car purchase program.
Two weeks ago, GATX Rail ordered the initial 2,500 cars under its program from Union Tank Car Co., which will deliver the tank cars during the next five years.
Trinity Rail Group will deliver 1,000 cars to GATX Rail annually for five years, beginning in second-quarter 2003. GATX plans to use the cars to replace retired rolling stock.
"With GATX's purchase program now in place, it is expected that additional cars, if justified by demand, will be ordered from any of GATX's six North American rail-car suppliers," said Clifford Porzenheim, GATX Rail's senior vice president of fleet management, in a prepared statement.
