GATX's TankTrain tackles tank car loading time for high-volume liquids

GATX Corp. July 19 announced plans to provide four sets of GATX TankTrain® equipment to Minneapolis-based NRG Power Marketing, a subsidiary of electric utility NRG Energy Inc.
TankTrain — a string of tank cars connected by flexible hoses designed for easier loading and unloading of large-volume liquids — would enable NRG to reduce loading and unloading time on No. 6 fuel oil moves between Albany and Oswego, N.Y.
An 18-car TankTrain could load certain liquids at a rate of up to 3,000 gallons per minute, finishing in 2.5 hours compared with more than 25 hours needed to load a similar commodity into 18 conventional tank cars.
"The TankTrain system solution provides an economical and environmentally sound transportation option for a high-volume shipper like NRG," said Rob Zmudka, GATX vice president-Midwest sales, in a prepared statement.
