GE Rail and MHF Logistical Solutions Inc. have jointly developed a remote-monitoring and diagnostics systems designed to improve rail shipping security. On Jan. 30, the companies announced they're testing the system on MHF's private gondola fleet through spring.

The system comprises wireless devices featuring Global Positioning Systems — designed to transmit real-time geographical position and sensor data via satellite — and MHF's tracking technology. The system is designed to determine if a car's cargo has been tampered with, or if a car hasn't moved, is off-course or is entering an area of concern. If a problem is detected, the system electronically sends an alert to a customer.

"Enhanced remote monitoring and diagnostics tracking have significant ramifications in terms of enhancing security and safety, as well as for reducing operational costs for both railroads and shippers alike," said MHF Executive Vice President Richard Zink in a prepared statement.

MHF provides North American rail, truck and marine transportation services for bulk solid and liquid, and packaged material cargo. The company owns more than 1,350 rail cars and truck equipment, and more than 2,500 intermodal containers. GE Rail markets freight and passenger locomotives, and railway signaling and communications systems, and provides information technology services.
