General Electric Co. and research/engineering firm Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) recently agreed to jointly develop and test an integrated container security system.
SAIC's Security and Transportation Technology (STT) business unit and GE Equipment Services have independently developed technologies to monitor and track containers and other transportation assets. The companies plan to integrate those technologies in a system designed to track containers, as well as detect and report intrusion attempts through any of a container's six sides. The system would include the GE VeriWise™ platform used to track and monitor over-the-road trailers.
GE and SAIC expect to include U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection's expedited clearance guidelines and global shippers' business requirements in the system's design.
"This agreement marks a natural growth of our technology to address other cargo security challenges, particularly at ports and other border points," said Andrew Greta, GE Equipment Services general manager of asset intelligence, in a prepared statement.
GE Equipment Services provides leasing and asset-management services for commercial and transportation equipment, such as rail cars, trucks, trailers and containers.
