Genesee & Wyoming generates fewer carloads in August

In August, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) registered 66,057 carloads, down 3.5 percent compared with August 2008’s level.

Same-railroad traffic — which excludes freight moved by railroads GWI acquired within the past 12 months — declined 18.3 percent. The short-line holding company reported significant drops in pulp and paper traffic, especially in the Southern and Canada regions; metals traffic in the New York/Ohio/Pennsylvania and Southern regions, and coal/coke/ores traffic in the Illinois and Rocky Mountain regions.

Beginning in August, GWI no longer included Huron Central Railway’s (HCRY) carloads in monthly traffic totals. In June, the company announced plans to discontinue HCRY’s operations sometime in the fourth quarter.

GWI owns and operates 63 regionals and short lines in the United States, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands, and owns a minority interest in a Bolivian railroad.
