Genesee & Wyoming posts carload increase in August

Today, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) reported August carloads totaling 73,711 units, an 11.6 percent increase compared with August 2009 volume.
The gain primarily was due to increases in farm and food products traffic in GWI's Australia region, and chemicals and plastics traffic in GWI's New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Illinois regions, according to a Sept. 14 statement.
GWI owns and operates 62 short-line and regional railroads in the United States, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.
