Genesee & Wyoming Inc.’s (GWI) April traffic, excluding acquired railroads during the past 12 months, declined 21.8 percent from the year-earlier period, hurt by drop-offs in coal, coke and ore, pulp and paper, and metals traffic.

The railroad’s total traffic fell 6.3 percent last month to 62,870 carloads.

GWI acquired three railroads in the last 12 months: CAGY Industries Inc., the Georgia Southwestern Railroad and the Ohio Central Railroad System. The three railroads shipped a combined 10,389 carloads in April.

GWI owns and operates 63 regionals and short lines in the United States, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands, and owns a minority interest in a Bolivian railroad.
