The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has appointed Griffith Lynch chief operating officer, effective in mid-March.
Most recently vice president of Global Container Terminals, he has more than 20 years of terminal operations management experience on the East Coast. Lynch previously served Sea-Land Inc. and APM Terminals in various capacities for a total of 16 years, including stints as APM’s VP of sales and marketing for North America, and senior director of operations.
In addition, GPA — which oversees ports in Brunswick and Savannah — reported that the Port of Savannah in 2010 handled a record 2.8 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up about 20 percent compared with 2009. Strong export volume outpaced imports and totaled a record 1.5 million TEUs, accounting for 52.8 percent of the port’s total throughput.
In December, the Port of Brunswick handled 40,537 auto/machinery units, a 21.5 percent year-over-year increase that enabled the port to end the first half of its fiscal year with an overall 52.2 percent gain, according to GPA.
“Consumer spending remained strong during December and marked the end of an exceptional calendar year,” said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz in a prepared statement. “The impressive monthly total was significant considering the pronounced peak season and last year’s efforts to replenish depleted inventory stocks.”
