To improve customer service and expense management, and sharpen its revenue focus, Great Lakes Transportation LLC (GLT) has organized its four transportation and bulk-handling companies into two geographically based business units.

The Eastern Business Unit, comprising Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad Co. and The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Co., will be based in Monroeville, Pa. The Northern Business Unit, comprising Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co. (DMIR) and USS Great Lakes Fleet Inc. (USS-GLF), will be based in Duluth, Minn.

Accordingly, GLT also made a series of management changes:

  • Peter Stephenson, previously vice president of both DMIR and USS-GLF, will head the Northern Business Unit.
  • Jerry Vast, previously with consulting firm Kingsley Group, will lead the Eastern Business Unit.
  • Elliott Hughes III was named vice president and assistant to the president. Hughes also will be responsible for Northern Business Unit commercial activities, as well as "high-impact" special projects.
  • David Novak, GLT’s vice president of strategy, planning and performance improvement, will be responsible for "People Programs," including human resources.<br>
