Next month, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority will hold public hearings to reivew a proposed fuel surcharge. The agency has projected a $20 million budget deficit in 2009.

The fuel surcharge would raise base rapid transit fares from $1.75 to between $2.25 and $2.50; all-day passes, from $4 to between $5 and $6; seven-day passes, from $17.50 to between $22.50 and $25; and monthly passes, from $63 to between $85.50 and $95.

If approved by the board, the surcharge would take effect in October.
