Harmon Industries founder Robert Harmon died March 2 at his winter home in Sun Lakes, Ariz., according to an obituary his family published in the Kansas City Star March 6. He was 95.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Harmon in 1946 founded Harmon Electronics, which later became Harmon Industries Inc., a worldwide rail safety equipment supplier. He retired in 1969 but continued to serve the company as chairman and a board member.

In 2000, GE Transportation Systems purchased the company and formed GE Harris Railway Electronics, a joint venture with Harris Corp. A year later, Harris sold its interest in the venture to GE.

Harmon is survived by one son and one daughter, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His wife of 66 years, Mildred, preceded him in death in 2003.

The family asks that memorials be sent to the Blue Springs Christian Church, 7920 S. 7 Highway, Blue Springs MO 64015; Chandler Christian Church, 1825 S. Alma School Road, Chandler AZ 85248; or The Gideons International, P.O. Box 723, Chandler AZ 85244-0723.
