In Los Angeles, a $3 all-day pass to use the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s rail and bus services costs less than a gallon of gas. That’s why the authority’s ridership surged last month compared with May 2005.

Metro Rail registered 7.7 million boardings, an 18 percent increase compared with the same 2005 period. Metro Bus' May ridership rose 10 percent.
