Honolulu to include airport spur in transit-rail plans
advertisement
Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann recently announced plans to add a rail spur to Honolulu International Airport as part of the Honolulu Rail Transit Project.
In 2006, the city council decided to route the Honolulu-to-Kapolei system through Salt Lake rather than the airport. However, almost 7,000 people work at the airport and 58,000 people arrive at and depart the airport daily, and that figure is expected to double by 2030.
The airport spur will cost $350 million to build and could be extended to Pearl Harbor when additional funding becomes available. The city also will conduct environmental studies for possible route extensions to West Kapolei, Waikiki and the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
The city plans to break ground on the project next year.
