House OKs measure to fully fund transit programs in FY2007

Yesterday, the House appropriated $8.97 billion for transit funding in fiscal-year 2007 — the level authorized under SAFETEA-LU, according to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).

The Senate still needs to vote on its version of the appropriation bill, but there is bipartisan support for fully funding FY2007 transit and highway appropriations, APTA says.

The federal transit program currently is funded at FY2006 levels under a continuing resolution that expires Feb. 15. Last month, new leaders of the House and Senate appropriations committees had considered freezing transportation funding at the FY2006 level, which falls $470 million short of the FY2007 levels guaranteed under SAFETEA-LU.
