On Tuesday, the House approved an amendment to H.R. 5576, the annual transportation appropriations bill, that would increase Amtrak’s fiscal-year 2007 funding by $214 million to a total of $1.1 billion.

The amendment was introduced by House Subcommittee on Railroads Chairman Steven LaTourette (R-Ohio) and House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee ranking member James Oberstar (D-Minn.).

The Bush Administration had proposed $900 million for Amtrak in FY2007 — $400 million less than the FY2006 allocation and $698 million less than Amtrak’s request.
