Houston METRO to drop fare passes, reduce discounts

advertisement

The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas (METRO) is proposing a new fare structure to simplify its pricing system and generate more revenue. In 2005, farebox receipts covered only 17 percent of the agency’s operating expenses, METRO said.

Under the proposed structure, the $1 base fare would remain the same, but period passes would be eliminated and discounts would either be eliminated or reduced. Instead, METRO would offer passengers five free trips for every 50 paid trips. No discount would be offered during off-peak travel periods.

The board will review the proposal at its Sept. 21 meeting. If approved, new fares would take effect Dec. 15.
