Houston METRO to finalize long-range transit plan

Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas (METRO) recently adopted its METRO Solutions Transit System Plan, which details needed transit improvements through 2025, and addresses traffic and mobility problems in the Houston area.

Developed during the past two years, the plan calls for expanding light-rail service 64.8 miles, adding an eight-mile commuter-rail line to Fort Bend County, and building nine park and rides and nine transit centers. The proposed light-rail expansion would provide service to Uptown/Galleria, Westpark, East End, Magnolia, Gulfgate, and Houston and Texas Southern universities.

METRO staff received public input on the plan during a series of neighborhood meetings. The board expects to finalize the plan’s phasing and financing during its Aug. 12 meeting.
