Last week, the 25 millionth passenger boarded the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas’ (METRO) METRORail system since the 7.5-mile light-rail line opened in January 2004.

The line has exceeded Houston METRO officials’ expectations, serving about 40,000 passengers daily — a number the agency didn’t expect to reach until 2020.

METRO ridership has been on the rise system-wide during the past year. Through fiscal-year 2006’s first three quarters, the agency set the second-highest nine-month ridership growth rate in its history, carrying more than 8 million METRORail passengers.
