Huron Central Railway receives federal, provincial funds to continue operations

The governments of Canada and Ontario recently agreed to fund infrastructure improvements that will enable Huron Central Railway to continue operations, according to the Railway Association of Canada (RAC).
The railroad will use $30 million in recently approved funds to upgrade the railroad between Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and Sudbury, Ontario.
“The federal and Ontario governments clearly recognize the importance of short-line railways to the provincial and national economies,” said RAC President and Chief Executive Officer Cliff Mackay in a prepared statement. “While these funds address desperately needed short-timer investment required for Huron Central, critical funding is needed for five more short-line railways in Ontario that services the province’s industrial and manufacturing heartland, including the mining, agricultural and forestry industries.”
