The Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) has named Charles Connors as recipient of the 2009 Silver Kingpin Award. President and chief operating officer of H&M International Transportation Inc., Connors will receive the award Nov. 16 at the 2009 Intermodal Expo in Anaheim, Calif.
The Silver Kingpin Award recognizes an individual’s contributions to the intermodal industry. Considered the father of the dedicated international rail facility, Connors came up with the idea of aligning the operations of steamship lines, railroads, motor carriers and terminals at one site, according to IANA. Under his leadership, H&M International has grown from a small trucking company to a large intermodal transportation company operating 25 facilities, including 11 rail terminals.
Prior to joining H&M in 1978, Connors was an owner and vice president of operations and sales at Peak Transportation, and held various positions at Maersk Lines.
IANA and predecessor organizations have presented the Silver Kingpin Award annually since 1977. Past winners include the Hub Group Inc.’s Thomas Hardin, intermodal pioneer Gordon Miller, trucking industry duo Greg and Judy Stefflre, long-time Mi-Jack Products Inc. employee Raymond Tippit Sr., Rail Management Services Inc. President John Gray and Progressive Railroading co-founder Frank Richter.
