advertisement
The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) recently approved a five-year grade crossing safety improvement plan.
Covering fiscal years 2011 through 2015, the plan will provide about $200 million through the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) for safety upgrades at more than 2,200 crossings.
In FY2011, the plan will allocate $39.1 million from the GCPF for five grade separations and 125 new crossing projects, including automatic flashing light and signal upgrades; in the next four fiscal years, the plan will provide $157.4 million for 20 grade separations and 1,788 new crossing projects.
Low-cost crossing improvements, such as the installation of reflective crossbuck warning signs and yield signs, also are included in the plan.
