Illinois commission to fund majority of UP crossing improvements
advertisement
Earlier this week, the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) approved plans to upgrade a Union Pacific Railroad grade crossing near Rankin.
Scheduled for completion in May 2010, the $198,600 project calls for installing automatic flashing light signals and gates.
The ICC will cover 95 percent of project costs through the Grade Crossing Protection Fund, which provides $27 million in motor fuel-tax proceeds annually for crossing upgrades and the construction or reconstruction of grade separations. UP will pay all remaining installation costs, as well as all future operating and maintenance expenses.
